Thousands celebrate Thanksgiving early

The U.S. Vets Center in Kalaeloa was filled with many homeless veterans enjoying live entertainment and a hot thanksgiving meal.

For Kevin Merk, since his family lives in Connecticut, this may be the only turkey he'll be eating for thanksgiving.

"Having everybody show their gratitude towards what we did and what everyone else in the program did just seeing all the humbleness," says Kevin Merk, U.S. Army veteran.

And, the response of appreciation towards those who volunteer from ko olina and the rotary club of kapolei doesn't go unnoticed.

"They're very grateful for all that we've been able to do for them we very much appreciate this opportunity to do that," says Bill Quiseng, Ko Olina Beach Club resort manager.

"They're always grateful that they're thought of but you know there are heroes and they've sacrificed so much and it's the least we can do," says Lajoy Hanohano, Rotary Club of Kapolei.

For hundreds at Lighthouse Outreach Center in Waipahu, its been an on-going six year tradition of partnering up wtih Ko Olina to celebrate the holidays early.

Pastor Joe Hunkin says he loves seeing the smiling faces of those less fortunate after they receive free food.

He says, Ko Olina also helps their community in different ways throughout the year.

"We have a shelter here and when the people get a place we have free bed, free sofa and free furniture donated to us and we give it to the people in the shelter," says Pastor Hunkin.

And, the message of giving back is being passed on to the younger generation...

"Those kids they love to do that and they work they love to volunteer. Main thing I know is giving out to the people don't worry about they don't give to you but he will open doors not just money but the blessings will come in a different ways," says Pastor Hunkin.

The Hawaii Food bank says there is no shortage of need in the community, so food and or monetary donations are always welcome.
