Known for aqua marine ocean water, bright white sand beaches and verdant valleys Hawaii, has yet another reason to visit: The 2nd Annual Hawaii Food and Wine Festival on Oahu from Sept. 6th-9th. Hawaii and food? YES! Back in 2009 I wrote Their Farm Your Table for Marin Magazine about the burgeoning farm-to-table scene throughout the islands, mostly inspired by the original 12 chefs of the Hawaiian Regional Cuisine. HRC was a motivated group of food purveyors who decided getting their lettuce shipped in from the mainland, had to stop. And for most, it did. Two of these chefs, Alan Wong and Roy Yamagushi (each with their own restaurant empire under their belt) have put together the Hawaii Food and Wine Festival.

Day One: Thursday September 6th;
Kamehameha Schools presents: The Bounty of He‘eia II
Journey to 800-year-old Hawaiian agricultural sites in the Ko’olau mountains and the shoreline of Kane’ohe Bay, Cultural practitioners will guide you in the art of dry taro pounding, and techniques for preparing poke, awa and steamed moi. The excursion ends with a delicious taste of He’eia’s rich bounty prepared by chef Kealoha Domingo. 8am – 3:30, various locations, $100 before August 15

Enter the MODERN Dragon Ever watch Iron Chef … well now is your chance to sample Chef Masahuru Morimoto’s cuisine at the uber hip MODERN Honolulu. In honor of the Chinese year of the Dragon (which is the most powerful and auspicious of the 12 animal signs) Chef Morimoto will be hosting “Enter MODERN Dragon: Morimoto and Friends” 6-9pm, Modern Honolulu, $200 if purchased before August 15, Here are some shots of last year’s event.

Day Two: Friday September 7th

  1. Mix with the Masters: - Join an all-star cast of chefs including Charles Phan from San Francisco’s Slanted Door, food producers and celebrity techies for a delicious day of talks, demos and Hawai’i In A Bowl lunch. 9am-3pm, The Modern, $100 before August 15, will include; Building A Sense of Plate and Place, Get Wild and Raw in Hawai‘i with Masaharu Morimoto and Ming Tsai, Hawai‘i In A Bowl: From Poi Bowl to Pho featuring Roy Yamaguchi and Charles Phan, BATTLE OF THE FOOD GEEKS: Silicon Valley Startups vs. Roy Yamaguchi, Todd English & More.
  2. Streets of Fire - Roy Choi’s Tacos and Tequila! Roy Choi from Kogi BBQ will be serving up Hawaiian style tacos along with Chef Roy Yamaguchi who will be adding his personal touches as well. The event is sponsored by The Patron Spirits Company… so be prepared to dance!, 10am-2pm, M at Waterfront Plaza, $150 before August 15.
  3. Halekulani Master Chefs Gala Series - Chefs Who Have Cooked for Presidents and Royalty – This line up includes Hubert Keller of Fleur de Lys’ here in San Francisco as well as a who’s who of Pacific Rim cuisines, 6-9pm, Halekulani, $1000 before August 15th.

Day Three: Saturday September 8
The Five Kings of Champagne Krug
Join Master Sommeliers Roberto Viernes, Joseph Spellman, and Richard Betts, as they walk you through a once-in-a-lifetime horizontal and vertical tasting of the world’s greatest Champagne. 9:30-11:30, Halekulani, $200 before August 15. Paradise Lost, then Found, The evolution of the classic Hawaiian cocktail. Master mixologists Julie Reiner and Francesco Lafranconi will take you back in time, to a point in history that will truly enliven the senses, while warming the soul.

Experience first-hand the beauty of the Islands and cocktails as they were truly meant to be. 11am-noon, Halekulani, $75 before August 15. A Tale of Three Terroirs: The Vision of Marchesi Antinori Billed as a once in a lifetime, side-by-side, vertical tasting of Antinori’s Tignanello, Solaia, and Guado al Tasso. Glenn Salva, general manager of the Antinori’s Napa Valley property, Antica, and their three Master Sommeliers, Roberto Viernes, Jay Fletcher, and Richard Betts, will walk you through the tasting, 11am-12pm, Halekulani, $150 before August 15.

My Favorite Wine Producer in the World. Joseph Spellman, Richard Betts and Roberto Viernes for a tasting of some of their most beloved wines as each master sommelier selects their personal favorites from some of the world’s top wine producers, 12:30-1:30, Halekulani, $100 before August 15.

From Farm to Table: Twenty-two celebrity chefs, notable for promoting “farm to table” sustainable sourcing and cooking practices will be paying tribute to the Hawaiian “Makahiki” festival, or harvest season. Event will be at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, 6-9pm, Hilton Hawaiian Village, $200 before August 15.

Day Four: Sunday, September 9th
Cuisines of the Stars: A Magical Journey of Food & Culture.
Thirteen world-renowned chefs (including Mourad Lahlou of Aziz in SF!) will create a culinary tour of ethnic foods from around the world using local produce and products at the lagoons under the stars. 6-9pm at Ko Olina Resort, $200 before August 15. Macy’s presents: Girls Got Game! Sunday brunch featuring uber chefs Jacqueline Lau, Christina Tosi, Susan Feniger, Joanne Chang and Hawai’i women farmers, 11am-1pm, Hyatt Regency, $85 before August 15.
