A birthday celebration for a 2-year-old gave me a chance to visit the Aulani resort and answer a question that had been bugging me since I first saw the $800 million Disney complex take shape at Ko Olina Resort in West Oahu:

Could Disney pull off its bold plan to blend its brand with Hawaiian culture?

The short answer is: Yes.

I’ve never cared for the exterior architecture, but once I entered the lobby I felt a Hawaiian sense of place. No Disney characters to greet us or portraits of Walt Disney on the walls. The lobby says Hawaii, and the view of the Pacific Ocean draws visitors inside.
