Go West: Splurge-worthy spas around the U.S.

Laniwai Spa

With the arrival of a slew of new spas and innovative treatments, there's extra incentive to book a flight, or take a long road trip.

From a Southwestern spa situated along an idyllic spring-fed creek in Sedona, Ariz., to a modern, beach-front property just outside Honolulu replete with a teen-only section (think a frozen yogurt bar and computer stations), here are some of the latest sanctuaries awaiting check-in.

At Laniwai (or "freshwater heaven" in Hawaiian), there's something noticeably different. And, it's not the smell of gardenia wafting through the air or the soothing sound of ocean waves crashing in the distance. Situated at the Aulani, Disney Resort in Ko Olina, just outside Honolulu, the dreamy haven is nothing short of paradise.

Outfitted in warm, earthy tones, the modern island oasis meets the most rigid spagoers' checklist with all of the essentials: sauna, steam room, hair and nail salon, and even a 5,000-square-foot outdoor Kula Wai hydrotherapy garden with rain-style showers for hot and cool water therapy (designed to mimic early Hawaiian practices for healthy circulation and body temperature regulation), herbal pools, vitality baths and a reflexology path. There's also a designated teen spa, Painted Sky, complete with a custom-blending bar for plumeria-infused body scrubs and papaya face masks, and "after hours" social events for a break from mom and dad.

Laniwai features 150 treatments ranging from the signature lomilomi massage using locally made sticks and river stones, to a triathlon facial ($165) designed to reverse sun damage and fine lines. In true Disney fashion, other unique menu options include family treatments such as the Ohana ($400) with lomilomi massages for up to six family members in a private spa suite, and the Makana ($155) for new parents who can learn the art of baby massage.
