The magnificent Humpback Whales are an endangered species, so being able to see them as they return to Hawaii from Alaska each December is a very special occasion. They come to Hawaii each year to breed and give birth, leaving the freezing waters of Alaska for the more tropical waters of the Hawaiian Islands. They are simply breathtaking to see as they breech out of the water and to some it almost seems that they are playing. Or maybe they’re just happy to leave those frigid waters and vacation in Hawaii?
Actually it is believed they might be playing, but perhaps more likely courting, looking for that perfect mate. Seeing a Humpback Whale leap out of the ocean and then slap their tail is an unforgettable sight. They are very sentient mammals and truly care for their young. They communicate through song through miles and miles of ocean and for very good reasons are often called “gentle giants”.
